GruvenParts.com is pleased to announce replacement strengthened BRASS spur gears premounted to stainless main shafts and high torque motors for the power folding mirrors on all 2013-2018 RAM 1500 and 2500 trucks including Big Horn, Express, Laramie, Lone Star, Outdoorsman, Rebel, ST, Sport Crew and Tradesmen with crew, standard or extended cabs! Buy qty of 2 to fix both mirrors and SAVE!
Note you can also buy the complete metal cased drive units for both passenger and driver side if you do not wish to complete the labor required to install the upgraded high torque motor and metal gear. We accomplish this for you on the complete drive unit option and please note there is a $30 core refund for sending back your drive unit in repairable condition (ie, center basket not broken, or unit otherwise damaged beyond repair).
As many have discovered, the power folding mirror assembly on these trucks suffers from a thin, weak, plastic spur gear mounted to the main drive shaft. The plastic spur gear cracks at the slightest impact or just wears out over time causing an inoperable folding mirror. The RAM mirror motors also get weak and die quickly. Unfortunately, RAM will only sell you a complete folding mirror assembly, which will cost you MORE THAN $800 ea after labor, depending on the year/make/model. And that $ would be wasted on yet another mirror assembly with another weak, plastic factory spur gear and weak electric motor that will also soon fail. Don't your waste time or hard earned money on more RAM mirrors that will also soon fail! UPGRADE TO LIFETIME WARRANTY METAL GEARS AND HIGH TORQUE MOTORS !
GruvenParts.com has addressed this issue by designing a strengthened spur gear made from solid gear BRASS with a thicker cross section to eliminate the stress concentrations which cause fatigue cracking in the OEM plastic gear. We have also designed a replacement high torque electric motor to accompany this new metal gear. Our new electric motor is required when switching out to the metal gear, as the ground circuit in the OEM motor does not allow for a metal gear to be installed. You can buy the gear/motor combo for one or both sides with the spur gear pre-attached to a new machined steel main shaft. We have thoroughly tested our redesigned spur gear and high torque motor using a new, OEM mirror assembly and computerized test equipment. Our test samples barely showed any wear whatsoever, and the testing did include random wacks against the mirror, jamming the mirror operation as it was folding, and manually stressing the mechanism all in an attempt the break the gear. Each sample was tested more than 5,000 open/close cycles and was still going strong at that point !
This product carries a LIFETIME WARRANTY! Provided you don't burn the vehicle, or otherwise smash the mirror into something, you can send back the motor drive unit to us and we'll replace the gear assembly and get it working again free of charge. You would only be responsible for shipping under this warranty.
Gears and Motors are sold together. Qty 1 will fix 1 mirror, buy 2 if you want to fix both sides. Fits Both Passenger and Drivers Side Power Folding Mirrors. You can also select the complete drive unit to same time and labor.

I replaced my broken plastic worm gear with the new motor and metal gear. The mirror works perfectly and folds twice as fast as the one that still has the plastic gear.

The quality and fit of these parts is awesome. The video was very well done and helpful.
Thank you for supplying what Ram should have installed originally instead of the factory junk that causes people to look elsewhere for a well built vehicle.

I was having a problem with my passenger side mirror folding on my 2016 Ram. I found this kit online and ordered it. It came and I installed it and it works great! My passenger mirror even folds in and out faster than the driver side now. I also have to make mention that the installation instructions were extremely well written and made this job much easier. Very pleased with this product.

Have bought two gear/motor kits for 2016 Ram power fold mirrors. The kits are outstanding as is the customer service provided by Paul. My 2nd replacement went sideways resulting in the assembly being sent back to rebuilt at the shop facility, by Paul's suggestion no less. In my estimation this sort of thing deserves recognition for going the extra mile. Hopefully I'll not need another set of mirror parts, but if I do I'll gladly do business with Gruvenparts again.

Great product replaces the plastic gear
This was a great. No removal of the mirror, fix while installed. The only neg is the folding of the mirror noise is a little more. To be expected as a plastic gear would be quite but not as reliable.

If you have the metal drive case, ignore the references to "epoxy". Instructions could be more clear. I watched a few youtube videos that pertained to my truck and that helped. I found that a large bench vise and socket to compress the spring and some pliers to rotate the retaining clip helped.

Dodge makes their electric retracting mirrors with plastic gears. So the entire mirror assembly is no longer good after the plastic gears fail. These metal gears, although not a real easy to repair part, should make my two broken mirrors work again. Why they didn't make their vendor upgrade to metal is unnerving as it probably would have cost five bucks for the upgrade.

It is a little pricey but compare to $800 bucks on the high end and $200 on the low end for a whole assembly. It is totally worth it. Even the motor that's provided is better then the oem motor. Mine close and open before my other side does now.
Paul himself is great and he gets the parts to you as quickly as he can. He very quick on responding to all your concerns and questions. There's no rating for him so I'll give him a 5 star on this review.
Now, as far as the repair goes. The instructions provided are pretty good but a video would have been more helpful. Also would of been nice if this kit came with a new locking washer for the spring. Just in case you send it flying or if it gets damage while trying to take it off. Other then that I couldn't be more happy with this kit.

Much easier than expected. (I am not a motor head) Highly recommend this product. You will save hundreds of dollars.

Tools you will need:
1) Have a Dremel tool or equivalent on hand. And some grinding wheels. You'll need to do some grinding.
2) 1" (or close to it) thin wall steel tubing... about an 1" or so long.
3) Good sized curved jaw Channel Lock pliers.
4) A vise or arbor press.
5) Electric screwdriver. (Nice to have but not necessary.)
6) Small flat blade screwdrivers. T15 and T20 torx bits too.
7) A small hammer
Getting to the gear box and removing it is pretty straightforward. Disconnecting the puddle lamp connector is probably the most difficult step.
Getting the gear box apart is a moderate adventure. I used several small flat blade screw drivers and hammered them in a little at a time to separate the top and bottom halves of the gear box. Keep working the screwdrivers in and pry gently. Eventually the gear box will surrender.
Originally I tried using a 15/16" socket to push on the spring retainer ring. The teeth of the socket would grab the retaining ring notches and made it difficult to turn the retaining ring. This is where the thin wall tubing is needed. The mirror post is just under 1" in diameter. You'll need that vise or arbor press to compress the spring unless you have the strength of Samson. 1" PVC pipe could be used but the OD of the PVC is large and makes it more difficult to get the pliers on the retaining ring.
Unless you like taking apart and re-assembling the gear box (you won't) go ahead and grind down the length of the spur gear shaft to prevent binding on the gear box walls. Use a 1/4" Dremel sanding drum to remove a little material from the spur gear mounting area plastic. Not much material is needed to removed but enough to ensure that there's enough clearance for the spur gear. It's no fun to have to tear the box apart again after finding out there's interference on the rotating parts.
Re-assembling the spring and retaining ring on the mirror post is probably the most difficult part of this process. The spring covers the locking lugs on the mirror post as it's compressed, making it difficult to know if the notches on the retaining ring are lining up and are past the lugs. Go slow and carefully as you compress the spring with the vise. Rotate the retaining ring with the pliers when you have the spring compressed enough to clear the lugs. You're kinda flying blind during this step.
Gruven's supplied instructions (located on this website) are usable. Disregard the epoxy bit. That's outdated info.
Make the recommended witness marks on the mirror post and mirror base before you pull the post off. The collet piece can drop into 3 different notches as you rotate it 360 degrees. Use only the position that puts the collet at its' lowest height.
All in all, it's not too terribly difficult but it does require some finesse to re-assemble that gear box, particularly the retaining ring/spring.
